System Architecture

Data is sent on to the Vehicle Management Centre server from each vehicle mounted unit using GPRS, a high speed data network using the digital mobile phone network.

This is transmitted in a proprietary format, heavily compressed and encoded and is not human-readable.

When received at our central servers the data is decompressed and decrypted. The latitude and longitude, derived from the GPS engine embedded in the vehicle unit, are then converted to a more conventional street – town – country format.

Data Storage

Log files, received from the data units, are stored on our central servers in encrypted format and are NOT available for clients.

Unencrypted daily log files are used to generate vehicle mapping and tracking reports. These are available for clients and indeed we regard them as being your property.

These files are stored in an industry standard DBF format which may be interrogated by a wide variety of standard database and reporting tools. For example Crystal reports, Open Office or even Excel.

Data is stored on a day by day format. This enables a neat and ordered file naming structure to be used. For example, the file named 20081225.dbf is the data for Dec 25th 2008.

Should you require that your data remain encrypted at all times we can offer this facility. This will require a small application to decrypt the files on your site. We have a small, free application to do this. Alternatively we can offer facilities and code samples to enable you to do this in your own applications.

In general, we store the data files for a period of 13 months, giving data for a full year. We do appreciate that legal statutes oblige some companies to store them for up to 7 years. If you wish to do this, please contact our technical department on 0845 226 9108, who will be delighted to arrange this in a means most convenient to yourselves.

Application Development

We offer development facilities to integrate our software into your existing systems. We are also prepared to work with your programmers to enable you to do this in-house.
